Easy ways to create a content calendar for your business

And why it’s a vital thing for every business to have

At the start of every year, you’ll hear business owners banging on about creating a content calendar for the coming year. And this is all well and good – if you know what you’re doing!

We’ll explore this further, but in a nutshell, a content calendar helps you plan out the content you want to share and to remain consistent. As we all know, consistency is the key when it comes to sharing content with your audience.

Consistent content helps you to build an audience and to build trust with them. Your audience come to love the type of content you’re putting out there and start sharing it with their networks (your ultimate goal – having your content shared).

It’s always about your audience

Always remember to keep your audience in mind when you’re writing.

Answer, ‘Why do they need to hear about this and why now. Why is this relevant?’.

I can’t stress highly enough that this is perhaps the most crucial thing when it comes to planning your content. You could be putting out a gazillion blogs, but if you’re not hitting the mark with any of them (i.e. no engagment, no sharing, no comments etc.), you’re wasting your time (and possible money).

So please, know who you’re creating your content for before you plan a thing.

4 easy ways to create your content calendar

1. Think about your business: Plan out 3-4 things that you will do in your business each quarter. Are there any products or services you’ll be promoting or selling? These don’t have to be set in stone, but they’ll give you some ideas for content.

2. Think about key dates: Are there any key dates coming up where you can do a special promotion or make a post about – holidays, Easter, Christmas, industry relevant dates etc.? To help you out, download our free holiday calendar here and see if there are any key dates you can build your content around – like world chocolate day!

3. What’s going on in your industry or around the world: It doesn’t always have to be about you. If there’s an event that’s related to your industry that you think your audience would love to hear about, share it with them. For example, fashion designers may write about the upcoming fashion shows in their city.

4. What are your customers having difficulty with: You may find that you get the same type of enquiries from your customers. Make a list of these FAQs and use this as the basis of blog posts. They don’t have to be long blogs, but you may find you get a few ideas here. For example, I could address the ‘5 common concerns people have about social media scheduling tools’.

Writing one blog post will give you multiple pieces of content

Always make sure you’re repurposing your content. One well-written blog post can be broken down into several social media memes, quote cards, a slide share, a video, etc.

Stop constantly trying to reinvent the wheel when it comes to creating content for your business and repurpose your content.
